How does the program work?

The Dental Savings Program arranges preferred pricing for some services that are not covered benefits under your student insurance plan. Basically, the Program serves as a marketing channel for providers that wish to sell their services to those covered by the . One of the reason that providers will grant discounts is that payment needs to be made at the time services are delivered, otherwise, the discounts don't apply and the student is obligated to pay the full charge.

Are there any covered benefits? If so, who do I bill?

Nothing in the Dental Savings Program is a “covered” benefit in the sense of an insurance benefit. The Dental Savings Program is not insurance. You will need to pay the provider at the time of service, according to the Fee Schedule that dentist accepts (either the Best Savings Fee Schedule or a Modidfied Fee Schedule). See the Fee Schedule page for more information.

How will I know how much I'll owe?

Most common dental services are listed on the Fee Schedule the dentist accepts, either the Best Savings Fee Schedule or a Modified Fee Schedule. Procedures not on the Fee Schedule are compensated at a rate of 80% of the provider's billed charge. Due to the nature of dental care, it is common for patients to have more than one procedure. You can ask the dentist if it is possible for them to estimate what you'll owe before starting care; however this is a complicated question. For example, a dental patient might receive an exam, cleaning, x-ray and have a cavity filled, but there different levels of exams, x-rays, cleanings and fillings, all with different prices. Further, it is difficult for the provider to know what mix of services a particular patient needs before the assessment and treatment plan is complete.

We develop networks around the colleges and universities we serve, so there may be a contracted dentist that is available to you. To check, click Contracted providers in Other States.

How Does this Program Relate to the Limited Dental Benefits in my Health Plan?

Most student health insurance plans have a limited benefit for accidental injury to sound teeth and sometimes for removal of wisdom teeth. If you have one of these conditions, and if you use a dentist contracted with the Dental Savings Program to receive care, simply pay the dentist directly at the time of service, then submit a claim to the claims administrator. See your health insurance plan booklet to determine if you have a limited benefit for accidental injury and/or removal of wisdom teeth.

If I receive a bill, what should I do?

Since you are required to pay the provider at the time you receive services, you should not receive a bill from the provider. If you paid in full at the time of service and still receive a bill, contact the provider directly. If you did not pay the provider at the time of service, you will receive a bill for the provider's full charges which you should pay in full directly to the provider. You only receive the discounted rates when you pay at the time of service.
